The provincial electoral campaign is the opportune moment to acknowledge the importance of the steel industry to the Quebec economy and to commit to defend and promote it.
MONTREAL, March 19, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC-ICCA), Quebec region, requests all party leaders and through them, all the candidates in the 125 Quebec ridings, to publicly take a position and recognize the importance of the steel construction industry, as major infrastructure work, notably the Champlain Bridge will unfold in the course of the next few months.
It is in this context that Ms. Hellen Christodoulou, CISC-ICCA Quebec Regional Director was mandated by members to send a detailed letter to main party leaders to clarify the expectations of the industry. The main issues concern the support for the adoption of a Quebec free trade and fair trade law, a royalty adjustment framework for local content and proposed wood Charter and the potential problems of a Bill or amendment to the Code that would promote the use of one material creating unequal conditions of competition.
The choices of the future will have a direct and significant impact on our industry and on the economy in numerous Quebec regions. In effect, with more than 17,000 employees working at 1100 businesses specializing in fabrication and erection, present throughout regions of Quebec from Abitibi to the Gaspésie, the steel construction industry in Quebec needs more than ever to receive the recognition it deserves. In fact, the steel industry represents 3.8% of the manufacturing sector in Quebec.
