Ontario Restaurants to be Recognized for Commitment to Local Food

Ontario Culinary Tourism Alliance Leads the Way for Local Food with New Foodservice Ambassador Program 

TORONTO, May 23, 2013 /CNW/ - The Ontario Culinary Tourism Alliance, with support from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, is creating a local food ambassador program to help recognize local restaurant industry leaders.

Through publicity materials, social media and the OCTA website, the program will recognize ambassadors - local restaurants and their chefs - who are committed to sourcing local food and promoting the farmers they work with.

"Since 2006, we've been working with over 30 destinations and organizations from across the province to not only help nurture a food identity for Ontario, but to support and protect our province's vast agriculture, aquaculture and viticulture resources through developing authentic culinary tourism experiences" said Rebecca LeHeup, Executive Director of the Ontario Culinary Tourism Alliance.  "With the continued support of the Ontario government, we are going to create a program to celebrate and support those restaurants which champion Ontario food —making it more accessible for locals and travelers alike."

"Together, we are helping our partners in the hospitality sector connect with local farmers, making it easier for Ontarians to buy local," said Kathleen Wynne, Premier and Minister of Agriculture and Food. "Buying local isn't just good for Ontario families - it's good for our communities, economy and hard-working farmers."
