More Canadians have lost control of their finances and are speeding toward financial turmoil

National Payroll Institute survey finds nearly half of working Canadians are now considered financially stressed, leaving no braking room for emergencies, meanwhile financial stress is costing employers an estimated $74.3 billion in lost productivity.

TORONTO, Sept. 22, 2026 /CNW/ -- On the road to financial wellness, the warning signs are no longer distant or faint. For many working Canadians, financial stress has become immediate, relentless and destabilizing, driven by rising costs, growing debt and economic uncertainty. More people are finding they have little room left to slow down, course correct or recover when even one unexpected expense threatens to push them further off track.

The National Payroll Institute's 2026 Annual Survey of Working Canadians reveals a financial wellness crisis that is piling up across the country. Nearly half of working Canadians (44%) are now considered to be financially stressed, a group that has grown from roughly one-third of workers historically to nearly one-half today. Even more concerning, the financially stressed segment is now more than double the size of the financially comfortable segment.

The result is a growing sense of lost control. More than one in four employed Canadians, 28 per cent, are living paycheque to paycheque and would struggle to meet their financial obligations if their paycheque were delayed by just one week. That figure climbed from 24 per cent last year to its highest level in five years. Groceries and household products are now the largest source of financial stress, cited by 55 per cent of respondents, while nearly half (46%) say they are worried about personal debt.

At the same time, fewer Canadians appear to have the financial braking room needed to absorb a sudden expense or change in income. The percentage of Canadians trying to save more has fallen from 51 per cent to 43 per cent, and only 31 per cent report making progress increasing their savings. Half of employed Canadians now spend all or more of their net pay, up sharply from 41 per cent in 2025. Yet the findings also point to a practical path forward: even small improvements in saving behaviour, debt reduction and emergency preparedness can help workers regain a greater sense of control.

"For a growing number of working Canadians, financial stress is no longer a warning light on the dashboard that we can try to ignore," says Peter Tzanetakis, President and CEO of the National Payroll Institute. "When people are spending everything they earn, relying on debt to bridge the gap and unable to build or maintain savings, even a small disruption can leave them feeling as though they are losing control."

How Working Canadians Can Regain Control
While the findings point to a serious and worsening problem, the 2026 survey also shows there is still a route forward. The research continues to emphasize that Canadians who save consistently are far more likely to be financially comfortable than financially stressed, underscoring the urgent need to help more workers rebuild financial resilience before stress deepens further.

One of the most effective ways to build resilience is to pay yourself first by automatically setting aside savings before money can be spent. Canadians appear ready for payroll-based savings solutions. While only 23 per cent currently have access to a Pay Yourself First program, 78 per cent participate when one is offered, and nearly half, 48 per cent, say they would value an employer-sponsored emergency savings program.

Practical steps do not need to be complicated to make a difference. Canadians can begin by focusing on small actions that create more financial breathing room:

      • Build a small cash buffer first, then work toward a larger emergency fund over time.
      • Automate good decisions, including saving directly from payroll where possible.
      • Direct raises, refunds, bonuses or other windfalls into savings before they are absorbed into day-to-day spending.
      • Prioritize paying down expensive debt.
      • Seek help when financial decisions become difficult to navigate.

"This is where employers have an opportunity to help workers move towards regaining control before the strain becomes even more damaging," adds Tzanetakis. "Financial wellness support should not be viewed as a nice-to-have. When stress is affecting performance, resilience, relationships and hope, helping employees course-correct is both a people priority and a business imperative."

Employers can leverage the expertise of payroll professionals to make saving automatic. Under a Pay Yourself First program, a small amount is directed into savings from each paycheque before the remaining pay is received, helping employees turn good intentions into consistent savings habits.

Canadians looking to improve their financial wellness can also start with the National Payroll Institute's Financial Fitness Evaluator, a resource designed to help people better understand their financial resilience and identify practical steps toward improved financial wellness.

If Workers Fail to Adjust Course the Pressure is Likely to Increase
The need to act is, nevertheless, urgent. Otherwise, increasing debt -- already a driving force of financial stress -- combined with external pressures could push many even further off course.

In fact, the survey found that 37 per cent of working Canadians carrying more debt than in previous years, with 42 per cent saying debt is affecting their ability to save and 30 per cent feeling overwhelmed by debt.

Many workers express a sense of 'driving blind' through an uncertain economy. Only 18 per cent believe their income increases are keeping pace with the rising cost of living. Nearly six in ten, 59 per cent, say rising living costs and economic uncertainty have made them more cautious about their finances, while 45 per cent have delayed or cancelled a major purchase as a result.

"Especially in these uncertain times, it is important to remember that financial wellness is shaped by more than income alone," says Chuck Grace, Professor Emeritus and co-founder of Canada's Financial Wellness Lab. "The research continues to show that consistent saving behaviours are the key to having options when faced with an emergency. Without those habits of building emergency liquidity, Canadians have fewer ways to protect themselves from external pressures such as inflation, rising interest rates and tariffs, leaving many slipping further into bad debt, pulling from retirement savings and unprepared for the road ahead."

      Canadians Can't Park This Stress
The consequence of this financial strain is visible in workplaces across the country. Financial stress is costing employers and the Canadian economy an estimated $74.3 billion in lost productivity. Nearly one in four employed Canadians say personal financial stress is affecting their performance at work, rising to 53 per cent among financially stressed workers.

Nearly one-third of employed Canadians spend more than 30 minutes per workday dealing with, or thinking about, personal finances. For affected workers, financial stress shows up as lower motivation, reduced productivity, taking personal or sick days, and strained workplace interactions. For employers, these costs are often further realized in employee benefits and assistance programs.

Financial stress is also travelling home with employees, straining relationships with family and loved ones and undermining mental health. Nearly half of employed Canadians (45%) report feelings of anxiety or depression connected to financial stress. More than one-third report loss of sleep (38%) and difficulty concentrating (38%).

The impact is relational as well as personal. Nearly three in ten Canadians say financial stress has made them less present with loved ones (29%), and more socially disconnected (29%). Almost one-quarter (23%) say they are quicker to lose their temper.

      Lost and Off-Course
Perhaps most concerning is the extent to which optimism appears to be disappearing. Only one in four employed Canadians (26%) express optimism about the future. Most Canadians (57%) now sit in a state of uncertainty, neither optimistic nor pessimistic about what comes next. For financially stressed households, the outlook is especially severe, with three-quarters describing themselves as very pessimistic.

Many Canadians also feel the road ahead is being shaped by forces beyond their control. Recession concerns (52%), global issues (53%), and tariffs (49%) rank among Canadians' top economic worries, reinforcing the sense that households are bracing for more pressure with fewer financial defenses in place.

"While the situation is serious, Canadians are not powerless," concludes Tzanetakis. "Small, meaningful actions, especially when supported through payroll, can help workers rebuild resilience, regain control and begin moving away from financial crisis."

      About the National Payroll Institute

About the 2026 National Payroll Institute Survey of Working Canadians
The 18th annual National Payroll Institute Survey of Employed Canadians surveyed 2,196 working Canadians, of whom 74% worked full-time. The survey was conducted online using an online panel methodology by Framework Analytics Inc. between June 22, 2026, and June 30, 2026. The survey is consistent with a Margin of Error of plus or minus 2.1% 19 times out of 20; however, because a non-probabilistic methodology was used, a definitive Margin of Error cannot be expressed. The data was slightly weighted so that the sample aligns with Statistics Canada's profile of the distribution of employed Canadians by gender, age, and location. Please note that the calculations and numerical values in this document are subject to rounding, and as a result, percentages may not add to 100%.
