YTV announces new spin-off series The Next Star: SuperGroup
TORONTO, Sept. 22, 2013 /CNW/ - Tonight, during a live telecast from Canada's Wonderland, with 3 million votes cast, 15-year-old Alicia Moffet from Saint-Lazare, Quebec won the hearts of Canadian audiences and was crowned YTV's The Next Star of Season 6. After weeks of vocal and choreography challenges and mentoring from judges Keshia Chanté, Tara Oram and Mark Spicoluk, Alicia is taking home a prize package, which includes a one-song recording deal distributed by Sony Music Entertainment Canada Inc., a $5,000 shopping spree at Sears Canada and an Epiphone Masterbilt acoustic guitar. The series and finale was hosted by Carlos Bustamante (YTV's The Zone).
Prior to entering The Next Star competition, Alicia had received more than 2 million views on YouTube. The Quebec native learned to step out of her comfort zone on the show, aesthetically and musically, and developed new range as a performer. With an already loyal fan base, Alicia will surely see success as she pursues the opportunities that come with the title of "The Next Star."
Alicia, along with fellow Top 6 finalists, Alex (15, St. Albert, AB), Dante (12, Amherstburg, ON), Jaden (15, Toronto, ON), Kat (13, Belle River, ON) and Paige (14, Winnipeg, MB) had fans cheering as they all performed their own original singles as well as a group single. In the 90-minute special presentation, audiences were also treated to performances by Cody Simpson and Eleven Past One. The Next Star Season 6 album is currently available on iTunes and the music videos can be seen on YTV and NextStar.YTV.com.
Also, during the telecast tonight, The Next Star: SuperGroup was announced, a new spin-off singing competition series that will work with young talent to find the next popular boy or girl group, such as One Direction or Fifth Harmony. Produced by Tricon Films & Television in association with YTV, the search for Canada's next SuperGroup sensation follows the journey of 30 finalists who travel to Toronto and compete in groups of five while they are mentored by an expert panel. In the end, only two groups will go head to head in the live finale, where viewers will vote to determine who wins the grand prize and title of The Next Star: SuperGroup.
Hosted by Jordan Francis (Camp Rock, Connor Undercover, CBC's Cross Country Fun Hunt), The Next Star: SuperGroup features performance coaches comprised of multi-platinum music producer and songwriter Damon Sharpe (The X Factor, Big Time Rush) and actress and recording artist Cory Lee (Degrassi: The Next Generation, Instant Star). They will be joined by a panel of industry experts, who include choreographer Nico Archambault (So You think You Can Dance Canada, Nureyev), vocal coach Sarah Morrison (Canadian Idol, Canada's Got Talent), make-up artist Vanessa Jarman (Canada's Next Top Model, How to Look Good Naked Canada), and stylist Corey Ng (MuchMusic). After assembling the young artists into five groups, the coaches and experts will guide and mentor each act as they are faced with an array of challenges designed to help them fine tune their sound, style and chemistry. The series is slated to premiere in the spring of 2014 and will conclude with a live finale event in Toronto. For a sneak peek of the series, click here.
