York Students Demand Action to Prevent Sexual Assaults

TORONTO, Sept. 7, 2012 /CNW/ - Students are appalled to learn of yet another sexual assault that occurred in a York University residence in the early hours of September 7.  This most recent assault is part of a disturbing trend of sexual violence at York University.

"Each new incident of violence on our campus highlights that the steps the York Administration is taking are not enough to make our campus safe," said Safiyah Husein, Vice-President Equity of the York Federation of Students. "The university administration must seriously work to prevent sexual violence at its roots, which means having meaningful discussions with students and the community about sexism, hatred and all forms of discrimination."

For several years, students have been calling on the University Administration to implement a mandatory equity course for all students, as well as expanding equity and inclusivity training to more students on campus. Despite the implementation of some safety measures, student proposals to address the root causes of sexual violence have been met with resistance.

"Creating a safer campus requires a holistic approach that addresses both physical and social barriers to safety," continued Husein. ""The university must listen to students and implement programs that will legitimately address the systemic issues of violence students face at York University.''

The York Federation of Students is the central undergraduate students' union at York University, representing over 50,000 full- and part-time students.
