Union Gas helps London wastewater plant get more energy efficient

Incentives support study, introduction of new equipment at Greenway PCP

LONDON, ON, May 7, 2014 /CNW/ - Union Gas is helping the City of London make its waste water treatment plant more energy efficient, lowering its costs by $400,000 annually and saving enough natural gas to fuel almost 600 homes a year.

A $60,000 incentive awarded through the Union Gas EnerSmart program helped the City commission an energy-efficiency study at the Greenway Pollution Control Plant, which led to the introduction of a new system to remove excess water from the waste stream. The upgrades, which included replacing existing belt presses with high-speed centrifuges, significantly reducing the amount of natural gas required to maintain combustion in the dewatering process, lowering the plant's annual natural gas use by 57 per cent, or more than 1.18 million cubic metres.

The Union Gas EnerSmart program offers incentives to municipal, commercial and industrial customers to implement projects that will use natural gas more efficiently, reducing energy costs and emissions. For more information visit uniongas.com/savemoneyandenergy.

Joe Gregorio, Union Gas commercial/industrial account representative for the London district, presented the incentive cheque to Geordie Gauld, Wastewater Treatment Operations Division Manager for the city of London, at the Greenway plant today.

"It's our aim to help our municipal partners lower their energy use and manage costs as efficiently as possible. We do this through the wide range of incentives we offer as part of our EnerSmart program," Gregorio said. "The upgrades the City of London has introduced at the Greenway plant will reduce energy consumption and lower operating costs for years to come."

"Reducing our energy use makes sense from both an environmental and economic perspective," Gauld said. "With the support of Union Gas, we've been able to make our waste water treatment facility much more energy efficient, which will help us manage costs better for the City of London, as well as contributing to Ontario's overall energy conservation goals."

Union Gas has been dedicated to energy conservation and reducing its environmental footprint for over 15 years. Since it first began offering Demand Side Management programs in 1997, Union Gas has delivered over 6.3 billion cubic metres of natural gas savings, and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by the equivalent of removing 2.1 million cars from Ontario's roads for a year.
