Top 10 Canadian Cancer Society research of 2012

TORONTO, Dec. 20, 2012 /CNW/ - In 2012, Canadian Cancer Society-funded researchers made important discoveries that will lead to new ways to reduce the burden of cancer in Canada. This outstanding research will help reduce cancer incidence and death and enhance the quality of life for Canadians living with and beyond cancer. Today, the Society announces the top 10 research achievements of 2012.

The Top 10 includes:

  • Decoding of the complex genetic makeup of triple negative breast cancers, a hard-to-treat form of the disease
  • Identification of genetic abnormalities that lead to a malignant childhood brain cancer
  • Clinical trial findings that improve survival rates of Hodgkin lymphoma patients with chemotherapy
  • Discovery of a compound in sea sponges that can be used to prevent cancer-induced muscle wasting
