The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer announces $7.9 million raised as 6th annual Ride commences in Alberta

Alberta's largest cycling fundraiser draws 1,768 riders and supports breakthrough research and the discovery of new cancer therapies at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, the Cross Cancer Institute and 15 other cancer centres across the province.

CALGARY, Aug. 9, 2014 /CNW/ - The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer announced 1,768 riders helped raise $7.9 million for the Alberta Cancer Foundation as the sixth annual Ride commenced in Alberta on Saturday.  Funds raised through the largest cycling fundraiser in Alberta, allow the Alberta Cancer Foundation to strategically invest in breakthrough research and the discovery of new cancer therapies at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, Cross Cancer Institute and 15 other centres across the province.

"We are incredibly grateful to the community of riders, donors, volunteers, sponsors and crew members who have enabled the sixth annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer to be a remarkable success and support our bold vision of saving more lives," said Myka Osinchuk, Chief Executive Officer at the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

"Every day, 43 Albertans hear the words 'you have cancer', and the Alberta Cancer Foundation is doing something about that. The $7.9 million raised is already being invested in research that will detect cancer earlier, improve quality of life and provide better treatment options for Albertans facing cancer," Osinchuk added.

In six years, the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer has raised over $46.2 million for the Alberta Cancer Foundation. The annual event draws thousands of participants and brings together communities of cancer survivors, cyclists and supporters who train and fundraise for months in order to participate in the two-day, 200 km Ride from Calgary to Okotoks and back.

"I was diagnosed at the age of 31 with a rare and aggressive form of the disease," said Fabian Huber, a six-year participant from Medicine Hat.

"When I was diagnosed, my wife and I had only been married for a year and we had two small daughters.  I was overwhelmed at the thought of my wife losing her husband and my girls growing up without a dad.  In July of 2007, I was thrilled to be declared cancer free! I will now do what I can to raise funds to support breakthrough research and it is my aim that families in the future do not have to face cancer," added Huber.

In 2011 Enbridge became the national title sponsor of The Ride to Conquer Cancer and more than 1,200 Enbridge employees, their friends and families have raised over $4.6 million for The Ride across Canada.  Funds donated by Enbridge by way of sponsorship enable more dollars raised by Ride participants to directly support cancer programs across the province.

"The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer is a cause we have embraced wholeheartedly. It's exhilarating to be part of The Ride weekend – when everyone's passion, dedication and perseverance culminate in an epic two-day journey," said Al Monaco, President & CEO of Enbridge.

"Employees, family and friends become involved with The Ride as cyclists, volunteers and donors, and together we're working towards a cancer-free future for all Canadians.  I am humbled to be part of such an inspirational group that is dedicated to raising funds for cancer research, prevention, treatment and enhancements in care. Together, we're striking an important blow in the fight against a disease that impacts two in five Canadians," Monaco added.

Ride organizers released the dates of August 8th and 9th for the 2015 Ride, and encouraged people of all athletic abilities to participate in the 7th annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer.

"We extend a warm welcome to everyone here this weekend and hope you all will join us next year for the 7th annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer," said Osinchuk.

"Be sure to come by the 2015 registration tent or visit us online at or call us at (888) 624-2453," Osinchuk concluded.

Ride organizers expect thousands of supporters to attend public cheering stations along the route.  For a map of the Ride routes, visit
