South Carolina House Representative Gilda Cobb-Hunter to speak at OPSEU Convention

TORONTO, May 6, 2014 /CNW/ - Democratic South Carolina House Representative Gilda Cobb-Hunter will be the Keynote speaker at the opening ceremonies of the 2014 Annual OPSEU Convention, held May 8-10 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Cobb-Hunter played an integral role in the OPSEU video "Made In The USA," where she described the devastating effects that South Carolina's "right to work" legislation has on wages, jobs and the economy. Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak had proposed similar legislation in Ontario.

OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas says he is honoured that such a respected woman is travelling to Ontario to address delegates at the convention.

"Gilda Cobb-Hunter has been one of the few brave voices to stand up for working people in South Carolina," Thomas said. "The people she represents have already paid the price for the state's anti-union, anti-worker laws, and her hope is that the people of Ontario don't go through it as well."

Cobb-Hunter represents South Carolina as the National Committeewoman to the Democratic National Committee, where she also serves as a member of the DNC's Executive Committee. Cobb-Hunter is the Chair for the National Black Caucus of State Legislators Youth committee and chairs the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus' Health Committee. She has received numerous awards for her legislative leadership and has been recognized as legislator of the year by several organizations during her years of legislative service.
