Sheldon Kennedy, Co-Founder of Respect Group, comments on Graham James sentencing appeal

CALGARY, Dec. 3, 2012 /CNW/ - Sheldon Kennedy commented on the Graham James sentencing appeal today stating "I believe that there should be longer sentences for pedophiles like Graham James.  These sentences should better reflect the severity of the crime and I continue to work with the Federal Government in this regard. I am pleased to say that recent legislation has eliminated pardons for child sex offenders (Bill C-23A) and created mandatory minimum sentences for child sex crimes (Safe Streets and Communities Act - Bill C-10). Through my experience I have learned that a persistent and professional approach with victim-focussed leaders is the best path to create change."

"However, what has become obvious to me is that the impact on sexual abuse victims is often invisible to our legal system and society at large," added Kennedy. "If we really want to make change, longer sentences alone will not expedite the healing process for victims or eliminate abuse.  We need to make the damage visible by educating the public on;

  • how these perpetrators thrive on our ignorance and indifference
  • our own moral and legal responsibilities
  • the tragic and long lasting outcomes suffered by victims
  • and the financial costs to society

That continues to be my goal at Respect Group where we have successfully certified over 200,000 Canadians on the prevention of abuse, bullying and harassment."
