Send the Gift of Cash, Help Build a School in Haiti

Western Union Teams Up with QHASUQ to Help Build a School in Duverger as Part of the Company's Education for Better Initiative

MONTREAL, July 10, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Starting in July, people in Quebec who send money to Haiti are also helping to build a school in Haiti. For every qualifying consumer-to-consumer Western Union® Money TransferSM transaction sent from Laurentian Bank, Insta Chèques, and Super C locations in the province of Quebec to Haiti from July 1 through Sept. 30, 2013, Western Union will make a donation to QHASUQ, a Quebec-based Haitian non-profit organization, to help build a school in the village Duverger.

This initiative is part of the Western Union Education for Better initiative, a three-year commitment to grow young minds and help meet global education goals.

"Western Union Canada is proud to support QHASUQ—it's truly an example of how we help move money for better," said Don DeLair, vice president and general manager, Canada, Western Union. "Education is one of the main reasons our customers send money and we believe it's the best path toward a solid financial future. We're excited to see our customers in Quebec rally behind this campaign to help finish the school before classes begin in October."

During the three-month period, Western Union will donate 50 cents to QHASUQ for every qualifying consumer-to-consumer Western Union Money Transfer transaction sent from participating Agent locations in Quebec to Haiti, up to a maximum of US$20,000. More than 260 Banque Laurentienne, Insta Chèques, and Super C Agent locations are participating in this initiative.

"We are very appreciative of this support from Western Union," said Yves Marthone, treasurer, QHASUQ Foundation. "This contribution is truly making a difference toward improving education in Haiti and shows a commitment to the reconstruction of the country in both infrastructure and education."

Located in the mountains outside of Miragoâne, the village of Duverger is isolated and difficult to access. There aren't any schools easily accessible nearby. The new primary school, once completed will have eight classrooms, an administration building with offices, a toilet block, a kitchen, and a playground and will welcome around 200 students.

Western Union has been helping the people of Haiti since 2003. Collectively, with grants from the Western Union Foundation, in-kind company donations, and donations from its network of Agents, the Western Union Company and the Western Union Foundation have donated more than US$7 million to Haiti.
