Senator and former Toronto Mayor endorses human rights expert for federal Liberal nomination in Willowdale
TORONTO, May 29, 2014 /CNW/ - Senator Art Eggleton, former long-term mayor of Toronto and former Member of Parliament and Federal cabinet minister endorsed Lily Pourzand for the Liberal nomination in the riding of Willowdale.
Mr. Eggleton will speak at a reception for Ms. Pourzand on June 24th at the Novotel Hotel. Ms. Pourzand is the first candidate that Mr. Eggleton has endorsed outside of his former riding of York Centre.
Mr. Eggleton stated in his endorsement letter:
We need bright, articulate young women and men in public life that believe as I do that politics can be a force for change. I believe Lily Pourzand, is just such a person. She is passionate about bringing positive change and extremely capable of making things happen. I am happy to fully throw my support behind her bid for the nomination in the riding of Willowdale.
Ms. Pourzand happily reacted to the endorsement: "I am so proud and thrilled of having the support of Senator Eggleton. He is a long-time champion of public spirited-causes and having his support is a tremendous honour for me."
Ms. Pourzand is an international human rights expert and a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School. She was a Constituency Assistant to former Willowdale MP Martha Hall Findlay.
Ms. Pourzand announced her bid for nomination in the summer of 2013. She has been a dedicated campaigner in Willowdale for the Liberal Party in provincial and federal elections since 2006. She is also the mother of three month old Artina and lives with her husband, Mehrdad Hariri in Willowdale.
