Scaling the Heights for Literacy

TORONTO, July 8, 2013 /CNW/ - On July 11th, Frontier College's newest board member, Bill Roberts, will embark on a harrowing 250km wilderness trek that takes him through the rarely explored Torngat Mountain Range, with a goal of climbing Mont D'Iberville, the highest mountain on the Quebec/Newfoundland & Labrador border.

For many, scaling a mountain is a test of physical endurance, but for Bill it's about challenging himself to make a difference in the lives of Canadians who struggle with day-to-day literacy.

What are the challenges he's willing to tackle on behalf of Frontier College? "There are black flies that are the size of small birds, inaccessible routes that require constant bushwhacking, complete and utter exhaustion, and the possibility of coming face-to-face with a polar bear. But honestly, that's nothing compared to the challenge that learners face when they walk in the door of Frontier College to get help with their literacy."

Roberts has been training daily, and has previously climbed some of the world's greatest peaks, including Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe; Mount Whitney, the highest in the contiguous U.S.; and Alberta's Mount Assiniboine in the Canadian Rockies.

Frontier College President Sherry Campbell is hoping that Roberts' climb will raise awareness of the challenges that face thousands of Canadians every day. "When you don't have the literacy level that you need to survive and thrive in our society, it is, indeed, like climbing a mountain. Frontier College is here to help Canadians climb that mountain."
