Royal Canadian Legion Branch 302 – Gravenhurst to receive Fire Safety Award

TORONTO, June 4, 2013 /CNW/ - Royal Canadian Legion Branch 302 - Gravenhurst will receive a Fire Safety Award from the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council at a ceremony on June 12, 2013 in Toronto. The annual Fire Safety Awards recognize outstanding contributions to fire protection and prevention in Ontario.

For the past 30 years, Branch 302 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Gravenhurst has been a loyal supporter of the Gravenhurst Fire Department.

The Legion provides generous donations to the fire department that range from $500 to $1,500 per year. With these funds, the fire department is able to purchase smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and handout materials for its Alarmed for Life program.

The funds also cover the cost of purchasing Fire Prevention Week kits for October, spring fire safety kits and other educational materials, as well as targeted resources such as fire safety playing cards for seniors.

In addition to the financial support, the Legion's commitment to the Gravenhurst fire department extends to offering its facilities to host the fire department's Spouse Appreciation Night and awards ceremony.  Each year, the legion's colour guard attends a service to commemorate the victims of 9/11.  In a display of mutual support, fire department members march alongside legion members during Remembrance Day and D-day ceremonies.

"The Gravenhurst Fire Department's three volunteer stations cover an area of over 500 square kilometres," said Ted Wieclawek, Ontario Fire Marshal and Chair, Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council.  "Thanks to the generous support of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 302, the fire department is able to provide smoke alarms and public education initiatives to residents throughout this large geographic region."

The Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council gratefully acknowledges the support of its sponsors in this event: Technical Standards and Safety Authority, The Co-operators Group, Kidde Canada Inc., Home Depot of Canada Inc., Proctor & Gamble Inc., Electrical Safety Authority, CSA Group, Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc., Roxul Inc. and Underwriters' Laboratories of Canada.
