TORONTO, June 4, 2013 /CNW/ - Royal Canadian Legion Branch 302 -
Gravenhurst will receive a Fire Safety Award from the Fire Marshal's
Public Fire Safety Council at a ceremony on June 12, 2013 in Toronto.
The annual Fire Safety Awards recognize outstanding contributions to
fire protection and prevention in Ontario.
For the past 30 years, Branch 302 of the Royal Canadian Legion in
Gravenhurst has been a loyal supporter of the Gravenhurst Fire
The Legion provides generous donations to the fire department that range
from $500 to $1,500 per year. With these funds, the fire department is
able to purchase smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and handout
materials for its Alarmed for Life program.
The funds also cover the cost of purchasing Fire Prevention Week kits
for October, spring fire safety kits and other educational materials,
as well as targeted resources such as fire safety playing cards for
In addition to the financial support, the Legion's commitment to the
Gravenhurst fire department extends to offering its facilities to host
the fire department's Spouse Appreciation Night and awards ceremony. Each year, the legion's colour guard attends a
service to commemorate the victims of 9/11. In a display of mutual
support, fire department members march alongside legion members during
Remembrance Day and D-day ceremonies.
"The Gravenhurst Fire Department's three volunteer stations cover an
area of over 500 square kilometres," said Ted Wieclawek, Ontario Fire
Marshal and Chair, Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council. "Thanks
to the generous support of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 302, the
fire department is able to provide smoke alarms and public education
initiatives to residents throughout this large geographic region."
