TORONTO, Dec. 10, 2013 /CNW/ - The Salvation Army 2013 Christmas Kettle Campaign in the GTA needs to raise $2,000,000 in 14 days to meet its $3 million goal.
The first Salvation Army Christmas Kettle was used in 1891 on the docks of San Francisco by Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee, by 1906 they had made their way to Canada and are still an effective fundraising tool for the organization. Belling ringing by volunteers at Christmas Kettles represents the subtle voice of those in need in our community. "The Christmas Kettle is a symbol of help and hope to Canadians in the more than 400 communities in which The Salvation Army works in Canada" says Andrew Burditt, Spokesperson for The Salvation Army, "By donating to the Christmas Kettle you're investing in the lives of people in your community. The Christmas Campaign helps The Salvation Army provide direct, compassionate, hands-on service to more than 1.8 million people in Canada each year, restoring hope and dignity to the most vulnerable in society. The Salvation Army's annual Christmas Campaign has grown into one of Canada's most significant and recognizable annual charitable events.
"The trend toward a cashless society is taking its toll on our Christmas Kettle donations," says Burditt. "People are no longer carrying cash in their wallets but prefer to use debit or credit cards to make purchases. Donations to the 2013 Christmas Kettle Campaign can be made at SalvationArmy.ca, by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY, at your local kettle, or via mail to The Salvation Army, 1645 Warden Avenue, Toronto ON M1R 5B3. Donors can also give by texting "HOPE" to 45678 from most mobile carriers in Canada.
