Mississauga Hospital RNs Urge Charles Sousa to Help Patients and Save Money by Stopping RN Cuts
MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 21, 2015 /CNW/ - Registered Nurses (RNs) from the Mississauga Hospital, a site of Trillium Health Partners, will be picketing the constituency office of the Hon. Charles Sousa, MPP (Mississauga South) on Friday.
The RNs, members of the Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA), are demonstrating their objection to the recent cuts of 15 RN positions from areas where patients need RNs' expertise and skills the most, including in: the birthing suites, cardiology, cardiac care, the cardiac step-down unit, recovery room, day surgery, and operating rooms.
The nurses will be in front of the finance minister's constituency office before their shifts, during their lunch breaks, and after work:

Earlier this week, ONA First Vice-President Vicki McKenna, RN, reminded the provincial legislature's finance committee that Ontario has the second-worst ratio of RNs per capita in Canada. There are now only 71 RNs per 10,000 people in Ontario, compared to an average of 83.6 per 10,000 people in the rest of the country. The 2015 Ontario budget does not address this untenable gap in RN care for patients since base funding for hospitals is now frozen for a fourth consecutive year.
ONA is the union representing 60,000 registered nurses and allied health professionals, as well as more than 14,000 nursing student affiliates providing care in hospitals, long-term care, the community, public health, clinics and industry.
