Propane Industry Supports Canadian Energy Strategy

OTTAWA, Feb. 24, 2012 /CNW/ - In support of Canada's goal for a clean energy strategy, the Canadian Propane Association (CPA) participated in the Energy Policy Institute of Canada (EPIC) Canadian Energy Strategy Feedback Conference on February 16, 2012 in Calgary, Alberta.

"Working with all forms of energy is essential to our mandate," Doug Black, President of EPIC said. "The voice of the CPA ensures that we address issues that impact the propane industry and its customers."

The conference, organized by EPIC to discuss a new approach to energy policy in Canada, included a submission that contained key recommendations for improvements within the energy sector. Three key improvement areas endorsed by the CPA are regulation, literacy and innovation.

The CPA supports the need for a regulatory regime that is both efficient and effective, and feels that this can be achieved by eliminating overlapping and inconsistent requirements at the federal, provincial and municipal levels.  Streamlined regulations limit the cumulative administrative burden and costs imposed on business, while achieving the intended policy objectives.

CPA President & CEO, Jim Facette, said, "the propane industry supports a regulatory regime that will reduce unnecessary duplication and uncertainty - particularly as natural gas exploration and production activities shift focus to areas rich in propane and other natural gas liquids." Canada is the fifth largest energy producer in the world and the sixth largest propane producer in the world.

Additionally, the CPA also supports the energy literacy and innovation recommendations put forth by EPIC. The propane industry encourages the partnership of government and industry for literacy initiatives that help Canadian citizens make informed decisions about their energy choices, as well as innovation programs that drive new markets and give Canadians access to the best technology available.

"As a low-carbon fuel that is available anywhere for a multitude of uses, we believe that propane is an essential partner in any energy strategy", added Mr. Facette.

About the Canadian Propane Association With over 400 members, the Canadian Propane Association (CPA) is the national voice of the Canadian propane industry, a multi-billion dollar industry that impacts the livelihood of tens of thousands of Canadians.
