Parenting Is Hard, Streaming Isn't - Says Netflix Helps Parents with the Daunting Task of Entertaining Kids This Summer

TORONTO, June 18, 2013 /CNW/ - The final school bell of the year is about to ring, so parents get ready – summer family fun time is here. However, the majority (54%) of Canadian parents with children 12 years and under wish it were easier to entertain their family during the summer months, according to a recent survey conducted by Ipsos Reid on behalf of Netflix.



To help parents manage the long hot days of summer, today Netflix launched (Netflix Families). This new destination was designed to meet family's summer entertainment needs. Parents will find the iconic Netflix rows filled with trusted recommendations of popular family TV shows and movies, information on the best ways to stream, and videos about how other families use Netflix. Accessible from any computer or tablet, the Families page is available for both members and non-members.

According to the same survey, it's most difficult for parents to fill the summer entertainment gap on rainy days (53%), road trips (45%) and when it's too hot outside (45%). Netflix gives parents easy entertainment solutions at their fingertips, as the service works on almost any device with a broadband, WiFi or mobile data connection, and members can stream thousands of TV shows and movies – always without commercials – anytime, anywhere.

"We see increases in family and kids content viewing hours during summer so we know Netflix is a great solution for entertaining families this time of year," said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer, at Netflix. "With the Netflix Families page, we've used our proprietary algorithm to create lists we think families will love. In the 'Are We There Yet' list we've picked TV shows and movies ideal for watching on your tablet in the airport and the 'TV for Curious Kids' lists have shows that will help keep kids' minds active during the summer months."

A monthly subscription to Netflix offers unlimited streaming for $7.99 a month, which includes a dedicated kids section that is curated in conjunction with ratings and reviews from Common Sense Media, a leading non-profit organization that provides independent, trustworthy ratings, reviews and information to help parents make great media choices. In addition to character-based selections, the service displays rows of TV shows and movies organized by easy-to-understand genres such as superheroes, princesses, dinosaurs and girl power.

Many families already have a Netflix-ready device in their household. Netflix works on a wide range of devices - from smartphones to tablets, laptops and Smart TVs to popular game consoles like the Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox and Nintendo Wii. Netflix Families provides quick-start instructions for those families who are unsure about how to stream.

Survey Methodology
These findings are from an Ipsos Reid poll conducted between June 10th to 13th, 2013 on behalf of Netflix Canada. For this survey, a sample of 1,024 Canadian parents with children ages 12 and under from Ipsos' Canadian online panel was interviewed online. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within +/- 3.5 percentage points had all Canadians parents of children ages 12 and under been polled. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
