OpenText Commits to Innovation as Gold Level Sponsor of Canadian National Appathon

Appathon Goal of Inspiring Application Development Aligns with OpenText's New AppWorks Developer Platform Initiative

WATERLOO, Ontario, Nov. 22, 2013 /CNW/ - OpenText™ (NASDAQ: OTEX, TSX: OTC), the global leader in Enterprise Information Management (EIM), today announced it will provide Gold level sponsorship funding of $40,000 for the winner of a national appathon hosted by Toronto-based XMG Studio. In an event at the University of Waterloo today, the President of the Treasury Board of Canada, Tony Clement, will highlight OpenText's sponsorship of the Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE) program. The initiative aligns with OpenText's AppWorks which provides innovation tools and resources to app developers.

The CODE appathon, slated for the weekend of February 29th, 2014, will challenge students, technology innovators, developers and Open Data supporters from all across Canada to turn valuable government data into useful and usable apps and information. The 48-hour appathon will pit creative developers against other enthusiasts to create the best application. A panel of judges, including OpenText President & CEO Mark Barrenechea and Minister Clement, will make the final selection.

"OpenText is committed to unleashing the power of innovation through application development that can inspire advancements of benefit to all Canadians," said Mr. Barrenechea. "The CODE initiative is important because it provides an opportunity to innovate using government data sets that were formerly unavailable, and to potentially develop applications of benefit to society at large. With our latest software innovations at OpenText, we are inspiring application development that is complementary to the CODE program."

OpenText introduced AppWorks as part of its Project Red Oxygen launch this week. AppWorks is a developer platform that provides common Enterprise Information Management API, developer tools and resources. AppWorks spans capabilities within and between OpenText's product suites and third-party applications, providing consistent user experience across desktop, mobile and web devices and is expected to engage and inspire app developers. Project Red Oxygen is a coordinated set of software releases focused on innovation and integration and is a major milestone in OpenText's EIM strategy to deliver an integrated EIM suite.

The CODE appathon will serve as a forum for innovation and entrepreneurship that can stretch the boundaries of Open Data and enable technologists to 'get their hands dirty' sharing ideas, inventing, researching the market, and starting the process for commercializing ideas, focusing on Big Data, Cybersecurity, and Open Government. Combining corporate data with government data sets can open up new opportunities, delivering commercial value more quickly and providing more meaningful solutions for customers.

"I commend the work underway in Canada to unleash the power of innovation and fuel apps using untapped government data to turn the natural resource of information into something of value for Canadians. As a global business and Canada's largest software company, OpenText supports these efforts," said Mr. Barrenechea.

Appathon host XMG Studio Inc., is an award-winning developer and publisher of mobile games.
