MPCC Annual Report 2015 - "A Time of Renewal"

OTTAWA, May 12, 2016 /CNW/ - The Honourable Harjit Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, tabled the Military Police Complaints Commission of Canada's (MPCC) 2015 Annual Report "A Time of Renewal" in Parliament.

The past year was marked by important changes at the MPCC including renewal in its leadership culminating in the appointment of Hilary McCormack in October as the new Chairperson. Despite significant changes and the unpredictable and complex nature of the caseload, the MPCC continued to gain accolades for being a great place to work as exemplified in the latest Public Service Employee Survey.

The year saw the release of the Final Report on the Fynes Public Interest Hearing, the beginning of a new Public Interest Investigation by an anonymous complainant concerning allegations into the alleged treatment of Afghan detainees by members of the Military Police and related investigations, and the continuation of an ongoing complex, multi-jurisdictional conduct complaint. It was also marked by the revitalization in the relationship between the MPCC and the Military Police leadership as it made significant progress on longstanding issues regarding MPCC access to the information needed to monitor and investigate complaints.

Quick Facts

• The Military Police Complaints Commission of Canada was established in 1999 to provide civilian oversight of the Canadian Forces Military Police.
• The MPCC reviews and investigates complaints concerning military police conduct and investigates allegations of interference in military police investigations.
• While it reports to Parliament through the Minister of National Defence, the MPCC is both administratively and legally independent from the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces.
