Moose Creek Energy opens new landfill gas-to-energy plant in Ottawa area

OTTAWA, June 7, 2013 /CNW/ - The Minister of Energy, the Honourable Bob Chiarelli, will officially open Moose Creek Energy's new 4.2 megawatt (MW) landfill gas-to-energy plant, located at the Laflèche Environmental Inc. facility in Moose Creek, Ontario, today at 11:00 am. The Moose Creek Energy facility is Energy Ottawa's second joint venture with Integrated Gas Recovery Services Inc. (IGRS), who together also own and operate the Trail Road landfill gas-to-energy plant in the city of Ottawa. Energy Ottawa Inc. is a subsidiary of Hydro Ottawa.

Landfill gas-to-energy generating plants turn landfill gas from decomposing waste into electricity. The new facility at Moose Creek will generate enough green electricity to power 4,000 homes and divert more than 100,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the atmosphere.

"This partnership is a win-win scenario," said Bryce Conrad, President and CEO of Hydro Ottawa. "We're turning a negative into a positive by harnessing landfill gas as a green energy source to power homes and businesses, while diverting greenhouse gas emissions in the process."

Hydro Ottawa's subsidiary, Energy Ottawa Inc., is the largest municipally-owned producer of green power in Ontario. Its renewable energy facilities include six hydroelectric stations at Chaudière Falls and landfill gas-to-energy plants at the Trail Road and Laflèche Landfills. Together these facilities help to reduce greenhouse gases by almost 300,000 metric tonnes of CO2 per year.
