Minister Valcourt Announces Appointments to the Gwich'in Renewable Resources Board

OTTAWA, Nov. 27, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, today announced two appointments to the Gwich'in Renewable Resources Board (GRRB).

Ms. Bobbie Jo Greenland has been appointed as a member and Mr. Eugene Pascal has been appointed Chair. The appointments will be for a term of five years.

"I would like to congratulate Ms. Greenland and Mr. Pascal on their appointments to the Gwich'in Renewable Resources Board," said Minister Valcourt. "I'm particularly pleased that Mr. Pascal has accepted his third term on the Board, now in the position of Chair. The addition of these board members will ensure that the GRRB remains successful in managing renewable resources in the Gwich'in Settlement Area."

"I am pleased to see that community leaders with deep roots and sound understanding of the issues that affect the people of the North have agreed to serve on these important organizations," said the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and Minister for the Arctic Council.

The GRRB was established by the Gwich'in Land Claim Settlement Act in December 1992. The Board is responsible for conservation and manages domestic and commercial harvesting of wildlife and forestry in the Gwich'in Settlement Area.

The GRRB consists of seven members, including the Chair, plus six alternate members. All are jointly appointed by the Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development and by the Executive Council of the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT). Four members are nominated by Canada, six by the Gwich'in Tribal Council, and two by the GNWT. The Chair is nominated by the Board itself. Governor in Council appointments are based on the guiding principles of competency, professionalism and accessibility to all Canadians.
