Minister Steven Blaney Announces Funding for Minute of Silence-Moment of Peace Ceremony Marking International Day of Peace in Montréal

MONTRÉAL, Sept. 21, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, announced funding of up to $5,750 for the Minute of Silence-Moment of Peace ceremony being held in Montréal today to mark the International Day of Peace.

"Today, on the International Day of Peace, each of us can reflect upon the sacrifices of the men and women who, through their service and dedication, have contributed to peace around the world," said Minister Blaney. "Through the efforts of organizations such as the Cercle de paix-Circle of Peace, we teach our youth to appreciate the value of peace and remember those who have died in the service of peace."

The Cercle de paix-Circle of Peace organization, in partnership with the City of Montréal, is organizing the "Minute of Silence-Moment of Peace" ceremony to mark the International Day of Peace, which engages secondary and post-secondary students in an international celebration of peace.

The ceremony consists of three components. The first element is the live and delayed broadcasting via UN-TV of ceremonies being held throughout the world and a speech by the mayor of Montréal greeting the mayors of various cities who are members of "Mayors for Peace." The second component honours Veterans from peacekeeping missions who are in Montréal and other participating cities, and includes the raising of the United Nations flag inside City Hall. The last component is Montréal's participation in the Minute of Silence ceremony presided by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon via the Internet.

The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding for non-profit organizations, educational institutions and other groups interested in planning remembrance initiatives. Funding applications are accepted throughout the year. For more information on the Community Engagement Partnership Fund, please visit
