Minister Raitt speaks at 2013 International Labour Conference

GENEVA (Switzerland), June 18, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, today delivered a plenary statement to the 102nd Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC).

"Our government is pleased to work with our partner countries to achieve greater levels of international cooperation on labour issues," said Minister Raitt. "Canada works closely with, and supports the work of, the International Labour Organization to protect and promote international labour rights and principles."

Each June, the ILC brings together tripartite delegations. These are made up of worker, employer and government representatives to discuss labour and employment issues of global importance and to develop and examine international labour standards to ensure that they remain relevant.

This year's conference focuses on a variety of topics, including employment and social protection related to demographic changes, environmental sustainable development and creating more and better jobs.

The Labour Program develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and regulations, such as the Canada Labour Code. These laws cover industrial relations, health and safety, as well as employment standards, and apply to federally regulated workers and employers.
