SALINA CRUZ, Mexico, Feb. 10, 2015 /CNW/ -- Under an agreement signed with Pemex, Mexico's petroleum company, nine Voith Water Tractors will be built for use at Oil and Gas Maritime Terminals on both coasts of the country. Construction on four of the nine tugboats began after a keel laying ceremony at Mexico's biggest shipyard, Astimar 20, which is located in the port of Salina Cruz on Mexico's Pacific Coast. Mexico's President, Enrique Peña Nieto, attended the ceremony and spoke about the importance of the project for the country.
"Voith Turbo is excited to supply the Voith Propulsion System for this project that is important not only to Mexico's oil and gas industry, but to the Mexicans who will benefit from the jobs created by the project," said Karlo Populus, Marine Subdirector for Voith Turbo in Mexico. "These Voith Water Tractors, utilizing the state-of-the-art Voith Schneider propeller, will serve Pemex well and deliver unmatched maneuverability, versatility, and safety."
The Voith Water Tractor is driven and controlled by Voith Schneider Propellers (VSP). The unique system combines propulsion, steering, and optionally active roll damping with its vertical design. It sets outstanding standards of propulsion efficiency and precise maneuvering at extremely high safety levels. Reliability and precision in towing and escorting service, salvaging, firefighting, oil pollution control and offshore supply have led to it being classified as the "Best Available Technology." There are currently over 900 Voith Water Tractors in use at 200 ports.
