OSHAWA, ON, Dec. 19, 2013 /CNW/ - Colin Carrie, Member of Parliament
(Oshawa), on behalf of the Honourable Shelley Glover, Minister of
Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced funding for
the Conseil des Organismes Francophones de la Région de Durham (COFRD)
for its annual performing arts programming.
"I admire the work and dedication of the COFRD, which allows the
community to make interesting artistic discoveries," said Mr. Carrie.
"The cultural programming offered by the COFRD is diverse and fosters
the community's sense of belonging to a larger, dynamic French-Canadian
The funding announced today will enable the COFRD to present a series of
diverse performances in 2014 and 2015, featuring Francophone artists
from across the country. This funding will also enable it to offer
activities providing a more enriching experience, such as
post-performance artist talks, workshops and programming in schools.
"Our Government recognizes that organizations devoted to arts and
culture ensure the growth of our communities and enrich the quality of
life for all Canadians," said Minister Glover. "That is why we are
proud to support the COFRD, which promotes the growth of
Franco-Ontarian communities through arts and culture."
"The Conseil des Organismes Francophones de la Région de Durham greatly
appreciates the Government of Canada's support," said, Linda Jetté,
President of the COFRD Board of Directors. "This funding is vital for
us to be able to offer quality shows and a glimpse of the performing
arts in all its forms. As well, this support will allow our community
to develop and appreciate our rich culture."
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $30,000 ($15,000 in
2014-15 and $15,000 in 2015-16) through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians
increased access to the variety and richness of Canada's culture
through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional
performances, and other artistic experiences.
