Member of Parliament Colin Carrie Announces Support for Arts and Culture in the Durham Region

OSHAWA, ON, Dec. 19, 2013 /CNW/ - Colin Carrie, Member of Parliament (Oshawa), on behalf of the Honourable Shelley Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced funding for the Conseil des Organismes Francophones de la Région de Durham (COFRD) for its annual performing arts programming.

"I admire the work and dedication of the COFRD, which allows the community to make interesting artistic discoveries," said Mr. Carrie. "The cultural programming offered by the COFRD is diverse and fosters the community's sense of belonging to a larger, dynamic French-Canadian culture."

The funding announced today will enable the COFRD to present a series of diverse performances in 2014 and 2015, featuring Francophone artists from across the country. This funding will also enable it to offer activities providing a more enriching experience, such as post-performance artist talks, workshops and programming in schools.

"Our Government recognizes that organizations devoted to arts and culture ensure the growth of our communities and enrich the quality of life for all Canadians," said Minister Glover. "That is why we are proud to support the COFRD, which promotes the growth of Franco-Ontarian communities through arts and culture."

"The Conseil des Organismes Francophones de la Région de Durham greatly appreciates the Government of Canada's support," said, Linda Jetté, President of the COFRD Board of Directors. "This funding is vital for us to be able to offer quality shows and a glimpse of the performing arts in all its forms. As well, this support will allow our community to develop and appreciate our rich culture."

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $30,000 ($15,000 in 2014-15 and $15,000 in 2015-16) through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians increased access to the variety and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
