Member of Parliament Bryan Hayes announces support for the Bon Soo Winter Carnival

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON, Oct. 21, 2013 /CNW/ - Bryan Hayes, Member of Parliament (Sault Ste. Marie), on behalf of the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced support for the Bon Soo Winter Carnival, taking place in Sault Ste. Marie in February 2014.

Funding will help the Bon Soo Winter Carnival's 51st edition showcase musical and artistic performances, as well as a visual arts display. Since it was first held in 1964, the festival has grown from a collection of events that already existed in the City of Sault Ste. Marie to a 10-day festival attracting more than 50,000 residents and visitors.

"I am pleased to see our Government's support for the Bon Soo Winter Carnival," said Mr. Hayes. "This family-friendly festival showcases the work and talent of over 300 artists and brings excitement to our community in the long winter season."

"Our Government is proud to support organizations that provide opportunities to local artists," said Minister Glover. "I congratulate the organizers of this winter festival for bringing rich cultural experiences to their community and contributing to the economic vitality of the region."

"Bon Soo is grateful for the support received from the Government of Canada," said Kerrie De Poli, Manager of the Bon Soo Winter Carnival. "As we begin our next 50 years, we are committed to supporting our local arts and culture, and this funding helps us take real steps toward that goal."

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $10,400 through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.
