Media Advisory: Vecova event on June 5 to celebrate new recycling social enterprise
- Vecova Bottle Pick-Up diverts more recycling from the landfill to create jobs for persons with disabilities -
CALGARY, June 2, 2014 /CNW/ - On June 5th, World Environment Day, Vecova is holding a celebration for a new social enterprise that creates employment for persons with disabilities and diverts more recycling from the landfill. In 2012, 17.6% of 2.35 billion beverage containers sold in Alberta were not returned for refund. In Canada, the employment rate for persons with disabilities is 53.5% compared to 75.1% for persons without disabilities. Vecova Bottle Pick-Up is a free recycling service available to Calgarians that has collected more than 327,000 empties to create three jobs for persons with disabilities over the past year.
On Thursday, June 5th, 12pm, Vecova Centre for Disability Services and Research 3304 33rd St NW MLA Donna Kennedy-Glans and Councillor Ward Sutherland will be speaking at Vecova on this new Calgary social enterprise alongside employees with disabilities this service has touched. Following presentations media are invited on a tour of Calgary's only non-profit bottle depot to see how recycling is sorted and employees with disabilities are supported with assistive technology. A World Environment Day celebration will follow with Calgary Food trucks and recycling displays.
