Media Advisory & Photo Opportunity - 14th Alcohol Interlock Symposium

OTTAWA, Aug. 12, 2014 /CNW/ - The Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) is pleased to host the 14^th Alcohol Interlock Symposium from August 17^th to 19^th in Washington, DC at The Dupont Circle Hotel.

Opening plenaries will be delivered by David Friedman, Acting Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Dr. Doug Marlowe, Chief of Science, Policy and Law at the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP). Jonathon Passmore, Technical Lead for Violence, Injury Prevention and Road Safety for the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Western Pacific, will be delivering the closing plenary.

The theme of this year's event is Alcohol Interlocks: Managing Risk and Behavior Change. Sessions will involve a mixture of panel presentations and discussion groups. Attendees include practitioners and vendors from North America, the European Union, South Africa, the Philippines and Japan.

Please note that plenary speakers and some conference presenters will be available for a brief Q&A with attendees and the media after the opening and closing plenaries. We ask that media identify themselves prior to asking their question and to keep questions on topic.

Since 2000, the Alcohol Interlock Symposia have collected the current state of knowledge about alcohol interlocks. The goal of these symposia has been to advance all facets in the field of alcohol interlocks and support the development of evidence-based programs and practices to reduce impaired driving. Research demonstrates that these breath testing devices attached to a vehicle starter are an effective tool to separate drinking from driving. They reduce recidivism by an average of 60%. Today, jurisdictions around the world are strengthening and expanding alcohol interlock programs in a variety of settings.
