Media Advisory - CAW Ottawa Cab Drivers Ratify New Agreement
OTTAWA, Oct. 11, 2012 /CNW/ - 240 members of CAW Local 1688 working under the West Way Taxi roof sign in Ottawa ratified a three year agreement with their employer yesterday, avoiding any possible strike.
The tentative agreement reached on Thanksgiving Monday includes, among other improvements, an 11 per cent reduction to the taxi dispatch fees paid by drivers to the company, putting thousands of dollars back into the pockets of the members over the life of the agreement.
"This is historic for the cab industry," said CAW Local 1688 President, Amrik Singh Dhami. "In most cases taxi companies come to the bargaining table demanding more money from drivers, but we managed, with the solidarity of our membership and the strong threat of job action to force the employer to improve job security and reduce the costs of operating a taxi in very difficult economic times."
