Many novelties for the Groupe Copley World Triathlon in Montreal
New dates. New venue. New courses. New formula.
MONTREAL, May 8, 2019 /CNW Telbec/ - The Groupe Copley World Triathlon (GCWT), known these past years under the name Montreal International Triathlon, quickly became one of the choice destinations for the Elite circuit of the ITU World Triathlon Series. On the eve of its 4th edition and to meet the ITU's criteria, the organization announced that the competition would be held two months earlier in the international calendar. On June 28 and 29, more than 1000 Para, Elite and Amateurs triathletes will compete on a brand-new course and in a new Sprint format. The organization is proud to welcome the ITU World Paratriathlon Series for its first, and only stop, in North America in history. GCWT also highlights its collaboration with the Douglas Foundation to raise funds to support mental health research and to promote the cause Canada wide, for the 5th edition of the Défi Douglas that will take place on June 29, 2019.
Because of the new competitions' formula, the event will now take place within one day. Athletes of the ITU World Triathlon Series, the Continental CAMTRI Cup and the Amateurs races will succeed each other on the new and improved urban course, in the heart of the Old Montreal. The competition venue moves to the Port of Montreal's Grand Quay to welcome athletes and over 15 000 spectators in a more convivial and weather adapted environment. Athletes of the ITU World Paratriathlon Series won't be left out, as they will achieve exploits on June 28, 2019, at the Parc Jean-Drapeau
TRIATHLON FOR ALL
"For some, triathlon can seem unaccessible because of the combination of the three sports. But who can pretend to have started the sport mastering swimming, biking and running? And isn't it the goal when investing yourself in a sport, to get out of your comfort zone, to grow and push yourself, says Patrice Brunet, President and Chief Executive Officer of the event and triathlete. The Groupe Copley World Triathlon is an opportunity for the most curious to be inspired and to see the sport in all its glory, for Amateurs to set a personal goal and for the Elite to perform in the hope of getting at the top of the world ranking. "
Per ITU rules, the start list for the ITU World Triathlon Series is only unveils one month before every competition, which doesn't prevent the Ontarian Joanna Brown from talking about her desire of taking part in the event. Remember that the Canadian achieved a podium finish at the ITU World Triathlon Series for the first time of her career two weeks ago in Hamilton, at the Bermuda stop, with a 3rd position. Last year, she took the 4th position at the Montreal stop, behind Vicky Holland (GB), Katie Zaferes (US) and Georgia Taylor-Brown (GB).
"We travel all over the world all year long so I'm excited at the idea that my family will make the trip from Ottawa to be there and support me. The crowd is always there which is really motivating for athletes, especially for the swim portion of the competition, because few races in the world are designed so that the public is able to see the entire race and cheer on us, says Joanna Brown. We are very lucky to have a race of this caliber in Montreal! And if everything goes as planned, I will arrive three weeks before the competition to study the new course and train accordingly. The Montreal step is renowned for its technical course and its high difficulty level. The challenge is appreciated by athletes. Regarding my goal, I aim for the podium, nothing less."
- Female and male athletes will share equally a grant of 200 000$.
- The Montreal stop of the ITU World Paratriathlon Series is a direct qualification race for the Paralympics Games of 2020
- The Amateurs' race Sprint and Standard format will serve as qualifications for the ITU World Triathlon Championships in 2020, that will take place in Edmonton (Canada).
- Holding the ITU World Paratriathlon Series and the CAMTRI Continenal Cup (Confederation of American Triathlon) allows exposure of a maximum of Canadian athletes on the world stage.
- With this goal of supporting succession and to make the sport shine, an important Amateurs segment is offered to the public, who has the choice of different categories and format. The proximity with the greatest international athletes is even more inspiring and motivational.

The Défi Douglas is a great opportunity to push your limits while raising funds to support mental health research in Montreal, and elsewhere in Canada. Lysanne Richard, high diving professional athlete and holder of 11 podiums is the proud spokeperson of the Défi Douglas this year. The Douglas Foundation and the Groupe Copley World Triathlon encourage the public to move together and in great numbers to support the cause, while having the chance of performing on the world Elite circuit. An even more meaningful challenge! Note that the Canadian Olympic Comittee and the Business Development Bank of Canada have decided to make a difference by registrating teams. Join them and make this event a significant moment.
THE SPECTATORS EXPERIENCE
The public is invited in large numbers to encourage athletes along the course. The option of buying a ticket to live an exclusive experience in the event's Triathlon Village is also offered, to enjoy the facilities designed for families and fans (games, food, bar, etc.). The Village also allows to be in the heart of the action with its bleachers, a giant screen, transitions areas and the podium.
