It's Big, It's Organized by Steelworkers and It's Coming to Sault Ste. Marie Next Year

United Steelworkers District Conference, Aug. 16-21, 2015

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON, Sept. 22, 2014 /CNW/ - Ward 6 Councillor Joe Krmpotich today announced a year-long buildup to a labour-sponsored event that will involve all businesses and citizens of Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding communities.

"Today I am proud to announce my personal support and involvement in next summer's United Steelworkers' Ontario/Atlantic Conference," said Krmpotich, who is also the Conference Organizing Chair. "Activities are being developed that will give all businesses and citizens of Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding areas opportunities to participate.

"It will be the first time in the union's 78-year history that Sault Ste. Marie has been chosen as the venue for a conference that will bring hundreds of visitors to our vibrant, naturally-gifted, northern city.

"The conference will be based on a theme of 'Strong Union, Strong Community.' It will benefit local business and introduce a large number of Steelworkers and their families to our beautiful part of the country."

The conference is scheduled for Aug. 16-21, 2015.

USW Ontario/Atlantic Director Marty Warren says he can't wait to hold a conference that celebrates the union's diversity and Sault Ste. Marie's unique history of steelmaking and union-building.

"We want to celebrate and educate," said Warren. "Many of our Atlantic Canada members will be experiencing something brand new in Sault Ste. Marie. And we hope the events we are planning will become great memories for folks in Sault Ste. Marie, who are invited to participate for the whole week."

USW Area Coordinator Jack Ostroski said news of confirmed events will be rolled out over the next 11 months.

"We are organizing for something memorable and we are going to approach local businesses and organizations for their support," said Ostroski. "The week of August 16-21 will be all about community and working people. We are not about creating division.  We are about building something better - together."

The United Steelworkers, which has represented workers in Sault Ste. Marie since the union was certified at Algoma Steel in 1936, represents more than 225,000 men and women working in every sector of Canada's economy.
