Highway 167 Extension: "New Road, New Opportunity" - Chief Richard Shecapio

MISTISSINI, Eeyou Istchee, QC, Feb. 27, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - The Chief of Cree Nation of Mistissini, Richard Shecapio, welcomes the opportunities that bring the extension of the highway 167. "A new road, a new opportunity", said Chief Shecapio at the ceremony of signature of the agreement signed with the Quebec government, today, in Mistissini.

To the Ministers Normand MacMillan (Transport) and Geoffrey Kelley (Native Affairs), who participated in this ceremony, the Chief Shecapio explained: "Today's announcement is not for a simple road. This is an announcement for the future of my community, of our young people who thirst for a better future, turned to new technologies but without renouncing our past and our traditions. In this sense, this road allows us to move forward, in every sense of the word."

The vast territory that will become accessible by this road affords not only mining resource opportunities but also opportunities for recreation, tourism, forestry and wind power generation. Indeed, it has been shown that various projects in these sectors could materialize in the foreseeable future if this road link is established.

Chief Shecapio reminds that this project is based on an important partnership with surrounding municipalities and several companies that have joint in to create a "Local, Regional and Provincial" (LRP) Consortium. "This partnership is important, for us as for the regional development", mentioned Chief Shecapio.

The Chief of the Cree Nation of Mistissini is also pleased with the involvement of Tallymen and families of which, territories, the new road will give access to. "The approach throughout this entire file has been to ensure the maximum benefits for the community as a whole, while ensuring that families impacted by the project also participate", he stated.
