Government of Canada Supports Economic Security of Girls and Young Women in Windsor

WINDSOR, ON, July 5, 2013 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, Mr. Jeff Watson, Member of Parliament for Essex, today announced Government of Canada support for a project to improve economic security among young women in Windsor, Ontario.

"Through Economic Action Plan 2013, the Government of Canada is committed to creating a strong economy for all Canadians, and women are key to Canada's economic success," said Minister Ambrose. "Through this project, we will empower more young women to succeed and support their future economic security and prosperity."

Women's Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc. is receiving $174,149 for a 20-month project to increase the economic prosperity of girls and young women in Windsor-Essex County. A youth council composed of young women from diverse backgrounds will identify barriers to their economic success. An advisory committee of community stakeholders will identify gaps in their services that may prevent young women from realizing their economic potential. In consultation with these stakeholders, the youth council will develop a community action plan to address the identified barriers.

"The Government of Canada is committed to improving the lives of women and girls in communities across Canada, including here in Windsor," said Mr. Watson. "This project will help strengthen prosperity for young women who might otherwise miss out on opportunities for success."

"We are pleased to partner with the Government of Canada to support the economic success of girls and young women in the Windsor community," said Ms. Rose Anguiano Hurst, Executive Director of Women's Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc. "With this funding, we can help facilitate opportunities to work together, and create a brighter future for them, their families and their community."

The Government of Canada has approved more than $5.9 million in funding to date to organizations to carry out projects that promote leadership and economic prosperity among girls and young women. Successful projects were chosen following a Call for Proposals entitled Setting the Stage for Girls and Young Women to Succeed.

The Government of Canada is committed to supporting projects that yield concrete results for women and girls while strengthening families, communities and the country. Through Status of Women Canada, federal support for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2006-2007, supporting more than 600 projects across Canada.
