Government of Canada supports 85 environmental projects in communities across Canada

Minister Aglukkaq announces funding that will help conserve and restore Canada's natural heritage.

DARTMOUTH, NS, May 20, 2014 /CNW/ - Minister Aglukkaq today announced $4,351,753 in funding for 85 EcoAction Community Funding Program projects across Canada. The Minister was joined by Minister MacKay in making the announcement.

The EcoAction Community Funding Program supports the key priorities of the National Conservation Plan (NCP), which was recently launched by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.  The NCP will provide a shared and coherent vision to advance conservation efforts across the country. It will enable Canadians across the country to conserve and restore lands and waters, and enhance the connections between citizens and natural spaces.

The Government of Canada recognizes the integral role that the non-profit community groups and organizations play in helping support conservation efforts across the country. The EcoAction Community Funding Program supports projects that engage Canadians to rehabilitate, protect or enhance the natural environment, and builds the capacity of communities and individuals to ensure future protection.

Quick Facts

  • All EcoAction projects must address one of the following four themes: clean air; clean water, climate change and nature.
  • Since 2006 EcoAction has approved $38,649,632 in funding for 1006 projects that engage Canadians in direct environmental activities.
  • For every dollar received through EcoAction, approximately $2.45 is leveraged from other funding partners.

"Our Government's EcoAction Program supports real, tangible, local action to help Canadian families enjoy a clean and healthy environment. These projects will support the key pillars of our new National Conservation Plan, by conserving and restoring our lands and water and protecting Canada's rich natural heritage from coast to coast to coast."

- The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and Minister for the Arctic Council

"By supporting these projects, our Government is helping Canadians make a real difference in communities right across the country, including right here at home in Nova Scotia, to further protect our current and future prosperity and safeguard the beauty of our Canadian natural heritage."

- The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada
