Go green on this red and white weekend with Off-Peak Electricity Rates
TORONTO, June 29, 2012 /CNW/ - Summer is officially here and it's hot, hot, hot. Get outside and enjoy our beautiful city this Canada Day weekend and remember that Time-of-Use (TOU) electricity prices are set at OFF-PEAK rates - the lowest electricity price - all day, all weekend. The following dates are designated OFF-PEAK periods:
- Saturday, June 30
- Sunday, July 1
- Monday, July 2
Off-peak hours are all day on weekends and holidays and the summer "Electricity" rate is 6.5 cents/kilowatt hour.
As summer temperatures steadily rise, so does our electricity consumption and our hydro bills. Customers should try to conserve and shift non-essential electricity use to off-peak times to help reduce the strain on the grid and their wallets. Customers can log on to the Toronto Hydro TOU website at torontohydro.com/tou to see their usage on an hourly, daily and weekly basis.
Keep cool, conserve electricity and save money this summer with the following tips:
- Sign up for peaksaver PLUS™ and get an in-home Energy Display free of charge. For more tips and information on conservation programs, visit torontohydro.com/saveonenergy
- Cool your home or apartment overnight, when hydro rates are lower. During the day, set the temperature at least one degree warmer than you normally would. Turn the AC off when you're not at home OR use a programmable thermostat to turn it off (or up) during peak times.
- Use a ceiling or floor fan to supplement your AC. You can raise the temperature on your thermostat and feel just as comfortable.
- Keep doors and windows closed while the air conditioner is running.
- Keep window shades drawn during the afternoon to minimize the passive solar heating.
