Galerie de l'UQAM: Fall Programming

MONTREAL, August 4, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - The Galerie de l'UQAM has unveiled its programming for fall 2014. On the menu: Michael Blum's analysis of the Quebec-Canada identity question; Myriam Jacob-Allard's exploration of representations of "the mother" in Quebec's country & western culture; and Graeme Patterson's foray into a world of fantasy and nostalgia, a Montreal premiere.

September 2 to October 4, 2014
Vernissage: Thursday, September 4 at 5:30 p.m.

  • Michael Blum. Notre histoire | | Our History

Under the residency program established by the Galerie in 2010, Michael Blum, artist and professor at the UQAM School of Visual and Media Arts, presents Notre histoire | | Our History, an attempt to articulate the dual identity of Quebec and Canada from a playful but critical perspective. The exhibition examines the identity issue from two angles: people's actual perceptions, using answers to the survey with which the project began; and a mythic dimension in a double museum space showing alternative fictional histories of Quebec and Canada.
  • Myriam Jacob-Allard. Un coin du ciel
Graduating Master's student in Visual and Media Arts at UQAM

Myriam Jacob-Allard's project Un coin du ciel uses an installation and video to explore representations of "the mother" in Quebec's country & western culture. Through the use of iconography and deconstruction of texts from popular songs, she explores the gap between smaller and larger narratives to better understand the distortion caused by these fragmentations. These stories allow us to envisage the construction of identities transmitted from mother to daughter and to consider the concept of lineage in culture, the possibilities for legacy or loss from one generation to the next.

From October 23 to December 6, 2014
Vernissage: October 22 at 5:30 p.m.

  • Graeme Patterson. Secret Citadel
Curators: Melissa Bennet and Sarah Fillmore
An exhibition produced and circulated by the Art Gallery of Hamilton and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia

Secret Citadel, Graeme Patterson's first solo show in Montreal, is on a major tour across Canada. Large detailed sculptures, each containing a world in miniature, allude to the artist's nostalgic memories of his childhood best friend, Yuki. The exhibition focuses on the trials and tribulations of growing up and evokes the vulnerability of friendship.

  • The Painting Project
A Snapshot of Painting in Canada

    Curator: Julie Bélisle
Produced by the Galerie de l'UQAM and exhibited online at the Virtual Museum of Canada

Presented as part of the Virtual Museum of Canada, an initiative of Canadian Heritage, The Painting Project includes sixty works by as many artists. Supported by extensive research, it sketches the outlines of current artistic practice in Canada and provides insightful commentary.
