MONTREAL, Oct. 29, 2026 /CNW/ -- Far too many people in Canada are struggling to find homes they can afford. Solving Canada's housing crisis requires immediate action to bring down costs, cut red tape and build homes more quickly. We are focused on building neighbourhoods where Canadians want to and can afford to live.
Central to that work, the Government of Canada launched Build Canada Homes, which helps increase the pace of affordable homebuilding. Build Canada Homes is also helping fight homelessness by building transitional and supportive housing–working with provinces, territories, municipalities, and Indigenous communities. It is building deeply affordable and community housing for low-income households, and partnering with private market developers to build affordable homes for the Canadian middle class.
As part of the Government of Canada's broader efforts to respond to the housing crisis, investments are being made across the housing continuum to respond to the needs of communities across Canada.
Today, the federal government announced an investment of more than $1.5 million for the renovation of two housing co-operatives in Montréal, benefiting a total of 23 housing units.
The announcement was made at the Coopérative d'habitation Parc Marquette, a 17-unit affordable housing project in the borough of Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie. Housed in a century-old building, the co-operative used the funding it received to maintain the property and address water infiltration issues.
Repairs were also carried out at the Coopérative d'habitation Objectif Chez Nous, which has six units. The funding was used to address water infiltration and drainage problems, as well as to repair balconies, masonry and exterior siding.
The announcement was made by the Honourable Rachel Bendayan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for Outremont, on behalf of the Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada.
The Government of Canada is making the housing investments that will help strengthen Canadian supply chains and create good jobs at every step of the homebuilding process-- helping to build more homes while strengthening the Canadian economy.
Quotes:
"Our federal government is proud to support housing co-operatives across the country, as we are doing today in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie and Laurier–Sainte-Marie. Building new housing units is essential, but preserving the ones we already have is just as important. This work provides residents with more comfortable, safe and welcoming places to live. This is how, together, we are building stronger communities and a Canada where everyone can feel at home." – The Honourable Rachel Bendayan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for Outremont
