Children's Aid Foundation takes part in Canada's Biggest Potluck Party

$1 for every #PotluckChallenge post will go towards improving the lives of young people leaving the child welfare system

TORONTO, May 6, 2014 /CNW/ - Bean salad, grilled chicken skewers and berry angel food cake were some of the delicious homemade dishes served at the Children's Aid Foundation's potluck party this week, as part of Sobeys' launch of Canada's Biggest Potluck Party, which is challenging Canadians to host or join a potluck leading up to Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution Day on May 16.

Canadians from coast to coast are invited to cook and share a meal together with family and friends. When participants share a post or photo of their potluck on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtags #PotluckChallenge and #FRD2014, Sobeys will donate $1 to the Children's Aid Foundation's Cooking Toward Independence Project, up to a maximum of $25,000.

"Whether it's at work or with friends, by coming together and sharing great food, you can help the Children's Aid Foundation transform young lives," said Valerie McMurtry, president and CEO, Children's Aid Foundation. "The funds raised from Sobeys' potluck challenge will help young adults learn a valuable life skill, which is so important when they are faced with the overwhelming task of establishing their independence after having grown up with little or no family support."

The Children's Aid Foundation's Cooking Toward Independence Project will help improve the lives of young people leaving the care of the child welfare system across Canada by funding cooking skills workshops that teach them how to prepare nutritious, affordable meals. The program is part of the Foundation's Bridging to Independence Initiative, which addresses the urgent and growing need to support young people across Canada who are aging out of the child welfare system, typically once they turn 18 or 19. With few resources available to them after leaving care, many of these young people struggle to complete high school, secure housing, and find employment.
