CBSA officers seize 2.3 kg of heroin in a bonded warehouse in Montréal

MONTREAL, Dec. 18, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers seized 2.3 kg of heroin in a bonded warehouse in Montréal. The estimated value of the drugs is $1,000,000.

Border services officers from the cargo section at Montréal-Trudeau Airport discovered the drugs on December 6, 2012, in a bonded warehouse located in Dorval, in a shipment of six boxes that contained work gloves imported from Pakistan. When they examined the boxes, they discovered a suspicious brown substance concealed in the gloves' fingers. Tests conducted with the Narcotics Identification Kit revealed that the substance was suspected heroin. Subsequent laboratory tests confirmed this.

The parcels were handed to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), who arrested one individual: Stephen Ashamu Giwa of Brampton, Ontario. He appeared at the Montréal Court House on December 11, 2012 to face charges of importation and possession of heroin for the purpose of trafficking. On December 13, 2012, the RCMP arrested a second individual related to this seizure: Adeseye Adegoke Adewale, of Montréal. He appeared at the Montréal Courthouse on December 14, 2012 to face accusations of importation and possession of heroin for the purpose of trafficking, as well as conspiring to import heroin for the purpose of trafficking.

"CBSA officers at Montréal-Trudeau Airport work in close cooperation with their partners from the RCMP's Airport Federal Investigation Section to intercept narcotics when they're being imported, before they reach our communities," said Benoît Chiquette, the CBSA's Regional Director General for the Quebec Region.

Since the beginning of 2012, CBSA officers in Quebec have made 1563 drug seizures valued at over $77 million.
