Canadian Steel Producers Association Welcomes Budget 2026 as a Foundation for Economic Security and Growth
FrançaisOTTAWA, ON, Nov. 6, 2026 /CNW/ -- The Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) supports the Government of Canada's Budget 2026 and its focus on powering economic growth, supporting Canadian workers and building a more competitive, resilient industrial base.
"We welcome the Government's commitment to strengthening Canada's trade remedy system so we can respond effectively to unfair competition. We must continue work to stop unfairly traded steel from undermining our producers, fabricators, and workers here at home. The Canadian Steel Producers Association looks forward to working closely with the Government to get this right," said Blair Dickerson, President and CEO, Canadian Steel Producers Association.
"Additionally, Canada's steel producers value the federal government's strong resolve to buy Canadian to build Canada. This is part of an overall recognition that Canadian steel is key to our economic sovereignty, whether as foundational inputs to our defence capability, for the infrastructure required to double our grid, or the production of goods Canadians use everyday. We look forward to continuing our engagement with the government on the implementation of its Buy Canadian policy, including through the announced consultations on domestic-content bonuses for the Clean Technology and Clean Electricity Investment Tax Credits," Dickerson said.
Canada's steel industry is facing unprecedented pressure from U.S. tariffs and global overcapacity. Under these conditions, supporting a strong domestic steel sector is not optional. It is essential to the country's economic security, industrial capacity and long-term sovereignty.
The Government's ongoing support for Canada's steel producers, including the recently announced Joint Steel Action Fund, establishing a Canada-Ontario Steel Task Force and stronger Canada Border Services Agency enforcement against unfair trade, will help level the playing field for steel.
Canadian steel is the backbone of our economy. It is in the cars we build, the bridges and buildings that shape our cities, the pipelines and power systems behind our energy and electricity sectors, and the ships that defend our country. The industry generates $15 billion in annual economic activity and supports more than 23,000 direct jobs and over 100,000 indirect jobs in communities across Canada. Supporting a level playing field for Canadian steel means protecting Canadian workers, Canadian industry, and our economic security.
The CSPA will continue working with the Government to ensure Canadian steel producers and steelworkers are positioned to drive the country's growth and future success.
