5 Percent Increase in International Air Arrivals to Mexico Between January and May 2012

Mexico Records Fourteen Months of Hotel Occupancy Growth

MEXICO CITY, July 11, 2012 /CNW/ - Mexico's Ministry of Tourism reported a 5 percent increase in the number of air arrivals to Mexico in the first five months of 2012, year on year and positively growing its tourism base across 141 nations. Approximately 4.9 million international tourists visited Mexico between January and May 2012.

2.6 million visitors came from the United States representing an increase of 1.2 percent year on year. According to the latest figures for the US Department of Commerce, Mexico remains the number one international destination for US travelers; furthermore, during the first quarter of 2012 Mexico held 19% of the US's outbound tourism market share.

More than 954 thousand visitors came from Canada. This represents a 1.5 percent increase when compared to the first five months of last year. In addition, Mexico received significant year on year increases from Russia (73.6 percent), UK (6.9 percent), Brazil (65.3 percent), China (32 percent), Australia (9.6 percent), France (6.3 percent), Germany (5.2 percent), Italy (6 percent), Colombia (21 percent), Chile (13.5 percent), and Japan (18.7 percent).

This is testament to the success of the Mexico's tourism diversification strategy designed to aggressively market Mexico's myriad of tourism products to a broad range of global travelers.

Hotel occupancy rates in Mexico grew 6.3 percent between January and May, year on year, across seventy destinations monitored. Hotel occupancy rates have increased consistently over the 14 month period ending May 2012.

Destinations such as, Riviera Maya, Cancun and Puerto Vallarta reported hotel occupancy increases of 3.1, 8.7 and 10.6 percent respectively from January to May, year on year.

2011 was a record breaking year for tourism in Mexico with 23.4 million international travelers visiting our destinations.
