Uber Canada and the Canadian Hearing Society announce joint partnership that promotes accessibility for people who are Deaf and hard of hearing

TORONTO, Sept. 22, 2016 /CNW Telbec/ - Uber Canada and the Canadian Hearing Society (CHS) have announced a formal partnership to expand employment opportunities and accessibility for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing across Canada.

The new partnership, announced today at CHS's International Week of the Deaf event "Creating an Accessible World," includes:

  • promoting driver-partner opportunities at Uber for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing
  • developing new features, and sharing best practices and technology that contribute to improved communication between the driver and client
  • introducing a new Uber "CHS First Ride Free" program that gives Deaf and hard of hearing clients a $20 discount on their first ride
  • launching a promotion September 26-29 that will see $1 from every uberWAV and uberASSIST ride taken in Canada to donated to CHS

Driving with Uber enables drivers to be their own boss and access a flexible work schedule while driving their own vehicle. Since Uber launched innovative features for Deaf and hard of hearing driver-partners last year, including flashing trip requests and text-only communication with riders, hundreds of people within the Deaf and hard of hearing communities have been driving for Uber in cities across Canada.

"At Uber, we work to promote social inclusion and to make economic opportunities available in the community, and we know that many people who are Deaf or hard of hearing struggle to find employment," said Sheldon McCormick, General Manager of Uber Ontario. "That's why we're so excited to announce this exciting partnership with the Canadian Hearing Society with the goal of opening up even more work opportunities for the Deaf and hard of hearing community in Canada."

As the largest agency of its kind in Canada, CHS works to remove barriers to communication and promote equity for people who are Deaf and hard of hearing in Canada.

"I applaud Uber for being an innovative employer, and I am so excited about our partnership," said Julia Dumanian, President and CEO, CHS. "Today, we are celebrating this announcement and how it will help increase accessibility and communication between Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing people."

CHS's "Creating an Accessible World" event was a celebration of employers who have accessibility as a priority and practice in their organization, and the employees who are thriving in these workplaces.
