Scarborough--Rouge River provincial by-election has been called for Thursday September 1st, 2016

TORONTO, Aug. 3, 2016 /CNW/ - Ontario's Chief Electoral Officer Greg Essensa confirms that the Writ has been issued to administer a provincial by-election in the electoral district of Scarborough—Rouge River on Thursday September 1st, 2016.

Canadian citizens who reside in the electoral district of Scarborough—Rouge River, and are at least 18 years of age or older on Election Day, are eligible to vote. To be added to the Voters List, eligible voters must show one piece of identification that includes both their name and residential address. A detailed list of acceptable identification documents is available at elections.on.ca.

Elections Ontario will be using electronic poll books and vote tabulators in all advance poll voting locations.  Election officials will use the electronic poll books to strike voters names from the Voters List before providing them with their ballot.  Voters will then cast their ballot using vote tabulators which feature assistive voting technologies that enable all electors to vote independently.

Key Dates

A blackout on political advertising begins on Wednesday August 3rd, 2016 and ends at 11:59 P.M. (Eastern Standard Time) on Tuesday August 9th, 2016. A second blackout on political advertising begins at midnight on Tuesday August 30th, 2016 (Eastern Standard Time) and ends at 11:59 P.M. (Eastern Standard Time) on Thursday September 1st, 2016.

Candidate nomination period begins Thursday August 11th, 2016 and ends at 2:00 P.M. (Eastern Standard Time) on Thursday August 18th, 2016.

Eligible voters can vote by special ballot in person at the Scarborough—Rouge River returning office or by mail. Electors must apply for their special ballot voting kit no later than 6:00 P.M. (Eastern Standard Time) on Friday August 26th, 2016. Applications are available at elections.on.ca and at the returning offices.

Advance polls begin Saturday August 20th, 2016 and are available through Friday August 26th, 2016. Advance polls are open from 10:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. (Eastern Standard Time).

Election Day is Thursday September 1st, 2016. Election Day polls are open from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. (Eastern Standard Time).

The publication of election surveys that have not previously been made public is prohibited between midnight (Eastern Standard Time) on Wednesday August 31st, 2016 and 9:00 P.M. (Eastern Standard Time) on Thursday September 1st, 2016.
