Rio Tinto Alcan, establishing Consortium de recherche et d'innovation en assemblage léger to stimulate Quebec's aluminium transformation industry

MONTREAL, Feb. 17, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Rio Tinto Alcan will invest $300,000 over three years in a new partnership with the Consortium de recherche et d'innovation en assemblage léger (CRIAL), aimed at developing innovative solutions and technologies in the field of aluminium joining and multi-material combinations.

"Growing out of the concerted efforts of the National Research Council of Canada - Aluminium Technology Centre (NRC-ATC), the Société de la vallée de l'aluminium and Rio Tinto Alcan, this consortium will fall under the responsibility of the NRC-ATC. Rio Tinto Alcan's involvement attests to the importance of cooperation between the public and private sectors. This partnership also demonstrates Rio Tinto Alcan's commitment to promoting the use of aluminium in manufacturing as it enables the partners to have a better understanding of the potential of innovative joining processes," said Étienne Jacques, chief operating officer, Primary Metal, Rio Tinto Alcan North America.

By participating in CRIAL, companies, particularly small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs),gain access to a wide range of innovative world class joining technologies as well as to NRC-ATC's leading-edge expertise in the field of aluminium.

Lajoie also extended an invitation to Quebec SMBs that are searching for additional tools to help with the development of their businesses.

The CRIAL consortium intends to capitalise on the synergy of participating members to pursue R&D in innovative joining and multi-material technologies for the benefit of its members.
