Plaque Unveiling for the Blue Water Bridge Centre LEED® Certification

POINT EDWARD/SARNIA, ON, June 25, 2015 /CNW/ -The Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL) held a brief ceremony today to unveil the Certification plaque for the Blue Water Bridge office complex LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver accreditation by the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) which will now be permanently posted in the lobby of the office complex on Venetian Boulevard, in Point Edward, ON.

LEED® is an independent certification program of the CaGBC and an internationally recognized standard for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of high–performance green buildings. Through LEED®, building owners and operators gain access to the tools they need, in order to have an immediate, positive impact on their building's performance.

The Blue Water Bridge Corporate Centre was opened in 2011 next to one of the busiest land crossings on the Canada–U.S. border. In addition to serving as Blue Water Bridge administrative headquarters, the four–story structure provides administrative, border security and inspection facilities for the Canada Border Services Agency, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and offices for many customs brokers and a transportation logistics firm.

Central to the green building's internal operation is a computer–controlled environmental management system, which monitors and automatically adjusts and maintains the interior conditions of each room and area to preset measures. The corporate centre's design includes a wide variety of sustainable development systems and features, ranging from rainwater recycling and solar water heating to commuter access services and drought–tolerant native landscape plantings.

The architect engineer for the Blue Water Bridge Corporate Centre project was Norr Limited, of Toronto, ON, with civil engineering services provided by McCormick Rankin Corporation, of Toronto, ON. The project's general contractor was McKay Cocker Construction, of London, ON.

FBCL is a crown corporation created under the Canada Business Corporations Act (CBCA) which amalgamated with the St. Mary's River Bridge Company (SMRBC), a wholly-owned subsidiary, on January 27, 2015 and the Blue Water Bridge Authority (BWBA), on February 1, 2015. The amalgamated FBCL is responsible for the Canadian federal interest at four international bridge locations in Ontario, as follows: the Canadian portion of the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge, the Canadian portion of the twinned Blue Water Bridge, the Canadian interest in the Thousand Islands International Bridge and the Seaway International Bridge in Cornwall.

The Blue Water Bridge has been in operation since 1938 and was twinned in 1997. The bridge is among the favorite crossings for commercial and passenger vehicles travelling between Canada and the United States. The U.S. side of the bridge is owned and operated by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
