National Volunteer Week is April 23 to 29

For the 14th consecutive year, Volunteer Canada delivers the National Volunteer Week (NVW) campaign in partnership with Investors Group

OTTAWA, April 24, 2017 /CNW/ - National Volunteer Week (NVW) is a time to thank and recognize Canada's 12.7 million volunteers for the difference they make in our communities.

Volunteering comes in many forms and is as diverse as Canada itself. What is volunteering in 2017? One way to recognize the act of volunteering is by the positive impact it creates. Did it change somebody's day for the better? Does it help to improve quality of life? Does it contribute towards building strong and connected communities? During Canada's 150, Volunteer Canada and Investors Group encourage people to recognize all volunteers, from those who occupy formal roles within an organization to those who are involved in community in more informal ways.

To celebrate all volunteers and to get Canadians to reflect on the definition of volunteering, during National Volunteer Week, Volunteer Canada will release daily crossword puzzles. The puzzles will reveal the impacts and benefits of volunteering, and the many ways Canadians are involved in communities. Some answers may be obvious, while others may cause you to stop and ask: "Volunteering, Eh?"

"Our National Volunteer Week theme, Volunteering, Eh? serves as a springboard for this important shift in how we think about volunteer recognition. Let's embrace all the wonderful ways that people care for each other and our communities by thanking all volunteers across Canada," says Paula Speevak, President and CEO of Volunteer Canada.

"Investors Group believes in the value of volunteering and the importance of recognition. Canadian communities are more inclusive and connected thanks to volunteers," says Trevor Krahn, Director of Community Investment, Investors Group. "Canada's 150 anniversary is the ideal time to reflect and expand upon what volunteering means, and to celebrate the collective efforts of all those who contribute to bettering the lives of fellow Canadians every day, in 2017 and beyond."

The NVW 2017 campaign was inspired by Volunteer Canada and Investors Group's new study Recognizing Volunteering in 2017 which explores the various ways Canadians participate in communities. The research supported the idea of Individual Social Responsibility (ISR), a concept that offers a more inclusive and progressive way to frame volunteering and community engagement.
