OTTAWA, Feb. 26, 2015 /CNW/ - The Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, today highlighted the Harper Government's support for Canada's nuclear industry in his keynote address at the 2015 Canadian Nuclear Association Conference and Trade Show.
Minister Rickford discussed significant government initiatives that are providing new opportunities for growth in the nuclear sector and supporting Canada's continued leadership in nuclear research, technology and safety.
These actions include significant investments to secure a more stable global supply of medical isotopes, as well as restructuring Atomic Energy of Canada Limited to bring private sector rigour and efficiency to its management while creating value. In addition, the Government is promoting trade for nuclear products and services with countries such as the United States, China and India that will create new opportunities throughout Canada's nuclear supply chain while promoting international cooperation and trade of Canada's nuclear energy products and services.
The Government continues to place the highest priority on safety, security and environmental protection in all aspects of the nuclear sector. This includes the Energy Safety and Security Act, which will substantially increase the absolute liability of nuclear facility operators from $75 million to $1 billion for injury and damage.
- Canada's nuclear industry accounts for 30,000 high-quality jobs and helps make Canada's electricity supply among the cleanest in the world.
- Nuclear power generates close to 15 percent of Canada's electricity, including more than half the electricity supply in Ontario.
- Canada is the second-largest producer of uranium globally, with exports valued at more than $1 billion.
- Uranium mining provides close to 5,000 jobs, and over 45 percent of mine site jobs are held by Aboriginal employees.
"Canada's nuclear industry is a key part of Canada's low-emitting energy mix and a major contributor to our status as a world leader in clean energy. Our government will continue to support jobs and growth in the nuclear sector by advancing research and trade opportunities within our world-class safety regime."
