Media Alert - Growing Number of Canadian Hospitals Getting rid of Visiting Hours

IS YOUR HOSPITAL ON THE LIST?

OTTAWA, Jan. 13, 2017 /CNW/ - A bold healthcare initiative by the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (CFHI) is revolutionizing the relationship between healthcare providers, patients and family members – by including families as partners in care.

WHAT:

The Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (CFHI) will release the list of hospitals, healthcare organizations and provinces that have committed to adopting and/or have adopted family presence policies – including getting rid of restrictive hospital visiting hours - ensuring the inclusion of patients and family members during their hospital stay.

WHEN:

TUESDAY, JANUARY 17, 2017

DETAILS:

  • A November 2015 study by CFHI found that less than one in three Canadian hospitals had accommodating visiting policies, and even fewer offered 24/7 access to designated family members.
  • Despite evidence clearly showing better care and health outcomes, family presence policies were more the exception than the norm in this country.
  • One year later, 24-hour visiting policies has become a grassroots movement that is sweeping the country, creating greater satisfaction among patients and their families during their hospital stay.

Interview opportunities include:

  • Stephen Samis, VP, Programs, CFHI
  • Maria Judd, Senior Director, CFHI
  • Armand Boudreau, CFHI improvement advisor and coach (French)
  • Local spokespeople (administrators and patients) from hospitals and healthcare organizations across Canada

B-roll will also be available via CNW.

The Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement identifies proven innovations and accelerates their spread across Canada, improving patient care, the health of Canadians and value-for-money. CFHI is a not-for-profit organization funded through an agreement with the Government of Canada.
