Leader in student affairs, continuing education joins HEQCO board

TORONTO, Feb. 3, 2015 /CNW/ - Denis Mayer, former associate vice president of student affairs at Laurentian University, has been appointed to the board of directors at the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO) for a two-year term effective immediately.

Mayer held the student affairs post from 1996 to 2013. Prior to that, he was the director of continuing education at Laurentian, where he was involved in distance and online learning regionally, provincially and nationally. He began his career in continuing education at Canadore College and is a former consultant for the Ministry of Culture and Recreation. He has also served as chair of the board for the Ontario Council for University Lifelong Learning, the Canadian Virtual University and the Canadian Association for Distance Education, as well as a board member of C ontact North.

He recently received an honorary membership in the Canadian Association for Continuing University Education and the leadership award from the Canadian Network for Innovation in Education. His community service includes volunteering at the Sudbury Chamber of Commerce, United Way-Centraide, World Youth Days, Ontario Summer Games and the Canadian Games for the Physically Disabled. He is completing a PhD in interdisciplinary studies at Laurentian, with a focus on first-generation students.

"Denis Mayer brings a wealth of experience in student affairs, continuing education and online learning -- areas of great importance to HEQCO's work," says Cindy Hazell, interim chair of HEQCO's board.  "We look forward to working with him and benefitting from his unique perspectives."
